English Government Set to Ban Plastic Straws. Many Switch to Paper Straws.
Recent coverage from the media has drawn attention to the amount of avoidable plastic that we dispose of. Much of the concern around waste plastic focuses on the impact it has on our oceans and rivers and the wildlife that live there.
Around 8.5 billion plastic straws are thrown away each year contributing to around 150 million tons of plastic polluting or oceans.
In response the English Government has announced a 25 year plan to eliminate avoidable plastic waste. With the plastic straw bring one of the worst offenders the Government are set to ban the sale of plastic straws.
A number of retailers, bars and restaurants have already stepped up and replaced plastic for paper. As the ‘ban the straw’ environmental campaign gathers pace more retailers are set to stop offering plastic straws as well as cutting down on other avoidable plastic.
Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign found that a million birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals die every year from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste.
After around 20 minutes of use a single plastic straw is thought to take up to 500 years to decompose. With this, many retailers, bars and restaurants are switching to paper alternatives.
